[-xʊs-; irisch »große Überlieferung«] das, - -, bruchstückhaft erhaltene irische Rechtstexte des 7. und 8. Jahrhunderts, deren Kerne älteres, mündlich überliefertes »fénechus« (»Irenrecht«; Rechtsmaximen und -aphorismen in metrischer oder rhythmischer Form) bilden. In den Handschriften des 14. Jahrhunderts sind die wegen ihrer archaischen Formen sprachgeschichtlich bedeutsamen Traktate von Glossen und Kommentaren überwuchert. Themen der drei »Drittel« (Bände) sind u. a. Pfändung, Bürgschaft, nichtelterliche Erziehung, Nachbarschaftsrecht. Da Irland bis zur Wikingerzeit von der Einwirkung fremder Völker und Institutionen frei blieb und die Rechtsschulen christlicher Einflüsse abwehrten, gibt das Senchus Már Aufschluss über »indogermanische« Institutionen und Bräuche, z. B. Fasten als Zwangsmittel, sowie über die Sippengemeinschaft.
